How to Migrate to a New Pager System

Technology

It’s a pretty risky business switching to a new pager system mid-service but with a few simple precautions the changeover can be as smooth as silk for your customers on the floor.

Audit What You Already Have

Identify the location of each button and receiver, record the current pairing and associated area(s) for each receiver. Record the frequency of each device, particularly for short-range devices (e.g. wireless call-button systems) to ensure that any replacement devices are compatible and comply with radio frequency spectrum rules for short-range devices.

Map Buttons Against New Zones

Create an overlay of your current button positions against your proposed new system’s zone plan. Some positions will be easy to transfer whilst others will require slight re-positioning in order to get the best from the new receiver’s coverage area.

Run Both Systems in Parallel

Keep your old system running for about a week and then swap over. This will give you time to test for any ‘black spots’ before you take down your old system.

Re-pair and Test Each Button

Make sure to register every new button to a receiver and test call every location before you start service. Find out any dead spots early before they become a problem during a busy shift.

Brief Staff and Set a Cutover Date

Let staff know which system to use and on what days, and then choose a date and time to swap over to the new system. Make sure to swap over to the new system at a time and date when there will be minimal disruption and no chance of staff getting muddled between the two.

With a little planning, your new system can start to prove its worth on the day you take down the old one.
