Five garage door components

Home

Garage doors have evolved over the past 150 years, with the design tweaked and improved over the course of time. Now with new technology allowing part or complete automation, the components involved are more complex and interesting.

Garages need to be safe and secure, and their purpose is not restricted to just vehicle storage. Amongst items most commonly stored are tools and household materials (90%), garden furniture and accessories (74%), and push bikes and scooters (55%).

Garage door components:

1. The door itself, together with its associated screws and hinges.

2. The opener is one of the most important components in automated doors. It responds to transmitters from the wall control or keypad. Openers can be chain drive (for heavier models), belt drive (which operates almost silently), screw drive, direct drive, or jackshaft.

3. Springs and cables provide the necessary tension to open and close the door and to keep it in position. Broken components can result in a door that becomes stuck.

4. Tracks and rollers ensure that your garage door can open and close seamlessly. Whereas the track supports the weight of the door, the roller ensures that it glides smoothly. Regular maintenance of these components should be carried out to make sure that they are free from dents, bends, and debris.

5. Wall control and keypads allow you to open and close your garage door from the comfort of your own home or vehicle. They can be wired or wireless and some even have the additional function of a security keypad, giving you complete peace of mind.
