Does your workplace need a first aid room?

Business

Health and safety regulations are very extensive when it comes to workplace requirements, and first aid rooms are something the government is very strict about. This is to be expected in large buildings such as schools or offices, but it’s also essential for smaller businesses and even the self-employed. We’ll guide you through all the rules and regulations of workplace first aid rooms.

Which buildings require a first aid room?

According to the Health and Safety Regulations of 1981, workplaces of any kind – including those with fewer than 5 employees, or even self-employed – must have the equipment, facilities, and personnel to provide immediate medical attention to anyone ill or injured at work.

Of course, for those smaller businesses, this isn’t the most feasible practice, as getting an entire room dedicated to first aid is difficult when you’re already starved for space.

The room doesn’t need to be for first aid exclusively, however, although this is preferred. As long as you meet the main criteria within the regulations, including keeping it clean and accessible, there’s no problem with you having the room used for other purposes.

What first aid room requirements should I be aware of?

Equipment is the obvious requirement here, as you can’t carry out first aid without the relevant supplies and equipment. An examination couch is also needed in order to carry out first aid, however, and a sink with hot and cold running water is also favourable, but not required.

Temperature is highly important, with an ideal first aid room providing adequate heating and ventilation that is not obstructive. Ventilation is vital, as clean, cool air is essential for reducing stress for both patients and care providers. For air conditioning Gloucester, go to Ace Comfort Cooling or another air conditioning specialist.

The position and signposting of the room also need to be clear and accessible, as first responders will need a swift access point for transporting patients, and workers will also need to be able to locate the room easily in the midst of crises.
